"Okay, cool. Thanks, Kurt." He was being so cool about all of this. Like they were still together, in a way. Like they had a chance. His heart swelled but he managed his expectations as he took off his shirt and flopped down onto the bed. He heard the shower running and closed his eyes, just listening and imagining Kurt in the shower. Naked. Wet.
Oh Jesus. Okay, no, he changed lanes and thought about the shooter - he finally had his thing, like Finn. So there was one benefit.
Kurt had luckily remembered to actually bring clothes into the bathroom with him, so when he re-emerged after a drastically reduced night-time skincare routine and basic hair maintenance, he was wearing underwear, pyjama pants, an undershirt, a long-sleeved shirt and a hoodie over it.
All right, so maybe it was the most clothes he had ever worn to bed, but at least it all matched and he no longer smelled like axe.
He gingerly sat down on the bed and, after a few moment's hesitation, he laid down and wrapped his arms around Blaine. Comforting him mattered more right now than any boundaries they had set.
Blaine didn't want to do anything to ruin this moment. He lay still and silent for a while, just enjoying how close Kurt was to him and wondering if he should have kept his shirt on. Apparently layering up was the new bedtime look and he was sorely underdressed.
He closed his eyes eventually, using Kurt's breathing to match his own so he could set a better rhythm.
"Good night, Kurt." Blaine whispered quietly, trying not to break the perfect, peaceful moment they had. He wanted to fall asleep in Kurt's arms, it was all he wanted.
"Good night, Blaine," Kurt whispered back, moving his hand to press it against Blaine's bare chest so he could feel his heartbeat. Blaine felt amazing as always, with his skin so soft and warm, his body solid and familiar and distractingly beautiful all at the same time.
He felt his heart beat and he remembered those minutes when he had thought that Blaine might have gotten shot. It helped from this getting sexual and eventually, to the sound of Blaine's even breathing, Kurt fell asleep.
The perfect silence was ruined at around 3am, when Blaine shot up from bed, disorientated and scrambling for his ringing phone. He answered it to his mom, who was talking very fast in Filipino. "Mom. Mom. Mom. Mom, it's too early for that, English." He had always been a poor study when it came to another language, despite his mom's attempts. "Mom. I'm okay, I promise."
He saw Kurt was awake too and gave him a sleepy look. "It's my mom." Blaine paused and then frowned. "No, mom, I'm not talking to you. I'm with Kurt. No, not in New York. Yes, I was there."
"Huh?" Kurt blinked as he sat up, sleepily looking at Blaine and having no idea what was happening. "Hello, Blaine mom." He knew he wasn't making much sense, mumbling and waving to Blaine's phone as if his mom would be able to see him.
His mind was only slowly gaining consciousness as he pulled his legs up and rested his head against his knees. "Tell her you can stay here until they are back."
"I'm staying with Kurt. Yeah, no, it's safe. His dad is home... no, we're not back together." Blaine clarified awkwardly as he sat himself up and leaned against the headboard. He closed his eyes, half dead but trying to have his head in the game a bit more for his mom's sake. "No, I'm fine. Everyone is fine. No one died. I just wasn't sure and -- oh, dad? No, you don't have to put him o--"
Blaine winced, he loved his dad, he did, but he and his dad always made the most awkward small talk. "Hi, dad. Yeah, no. I'm okay. I love you too. Yeah, I'm with a ... friend." It was just easier to not get into it. "Yeah, thanks. Okay. Okay, talk soon." And, as always, he was back with his mom. He and his mom found it way easier to talk. "Uh-huh. Mom, look, I love you but it's crazy late here and I'm keeping people up. Can we talk tomorrow morning? Yeah. Okay. Love you."
He turned to Kurt, smiling tiredly. "My mom says to say she loves you too."
"I do love your mom. What a style icon." It was a great reason to love her, even if it wasn't just for how quietly - and sometimes not so quietly - supportive she was. Kurt smiled a little, moving over so he could lean against the headboard next to Blaine. He finally unzipped his hoodie, having gotten warmer than he wanted to be while sleeping pressed up against Blaine. Made sense, he supposed.
"You sleep all right so far?" He had heard Blaine whimper in his sleep once, which had woken him up, but luckily a bit of shushing and, admittedly, a few kisses against his neck had calmed him down again.
"Bad dreams, I guess. My stress comes out in my sleep." Blaine joked as he turned off his phone and set it aside, giving Kurt a curious look. He hoped he wasn't bothering him in his sleep or anything, he didn't want to be a pain. Kurt once told him he'd sang a bit in his sleep and ever since then, he was very hyper aware he was a sleep mumbler/singer. Apparently.
"It was nice to hear my parents. I felt like it wasn't safe until I heard them, you know?" He just wanted to assure them and then it could all start to go away. At least, he hoped as much. "My mom loves me and my dad too. Though I wish he'd stop calling me slugger. What am I even slugging in his mind?"
"Something distinctly straight, I fear." Kurt reached for Blaine's hand, mostly to keep him from fisting the sheets the way he did right now. He liked those sheets, he didn't want them to get messed up.
And yes, all right, obviously he wanted to hold Blaine's hand. Wanted to be close to Blaine in every way. "You are safe," he assured him, while looking at him from the side. His eyes were used to the dark right now, so he could make him out quite well. "I'm keeping you safe tonight. Promise."
Blaine smiled dorkily at Kurt, unable to believe that one bad thing could end with something this good happening. He honestly couldn't have imagined his day going like this. He slid back down onto bed and let go of Kurt's hand but slid that little bit closer to him, his eyes closed as he settled back in. "I muted my phone so we won't be woken by anyone else. Hopefully. Let's try to get some sleep."
"Yeah. Let's." Kurt laid down next to Blaine again and, yes, after taking off his hoodie, he did wrap his arms around him once more. He held him and stayed very still until he was sure Blaine was asleep. Closing his eyes, it was difficult to fend it all off. The feelings. The feelings. Blaine smelled like Blaine, amazing, falling asleep next to him felt right and the idea of kissing him senseless was ever so appealing.
In the end he allowed himself to be haunted by visions of Blaine that time he cheated on him, how he imagined it. With someone who vaguely and sometimes not so vaguely looked like Sebastian, someone who could give Blaine everything Kurt couldn't. It really helped keep Kurt grounded, so there was that. Eventually, he managed to fall asleep with a deep-set frown on his face.
